“No Kings Day” is a nationwide day of defiance and protest, organized to reject what its proponents describe as authoritarianism and the militarization of democracy. Coinciding with the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday, which he is marking with a large military parade in Washington D.C., “No Kings Day” aims to counter what organizers view as a lavish display of ego and strongman politics. Instead of protesting in Washington D.C., thousands of events are planned across nearly 2,000 locations throughout the country, emphasizing the idea that “real power isn’t staged in Washington — it rises up everywhere else.” The movement, spearheaded by the 50501 Movement and organizations like Indivisible, asserts that “in America, we don’t do kings,” and seeks to demonstrate the collective power of citizens in upholding democratic values against perceived governmental overreach and corruption.
