The Kamon were markers that identified both individuals and families. The aristocracy during the Heian Period (794–1185) had a fixed hierarchy based on status, so for example, when one noble riding in an ox-drawn carriage met another’s carriage on the road, the noble of lower status had to give way. Family crests were added to the carriages to clearly convey this sign of status.
