Theo Bertz is a graphic designer and fine artist. He also does amazing sketches! I had the pleasure of working with Theo on a book featuring his sketches (and paintings). The relationship was great. This is one of my best designs (ever). We talked daily. Theo has thousands of sketches and painting, so part of my design work was editorial. I introduced various design elements including paper ripped from a spiral bound sketch, rough backgrounds, layered colors and a lot of other elements. Theo almost loved everything I did. Good book design is the quiet engine of reading, transforming raw text into an immersive, effortless experience by harmonizing aesthetics with function. Beyond an eye-catching cover that piques curiosity, thoughtful interior design—from precise typography and comfortable line spacing to balanced margins and appropriate paper weight—directly reduces visual fatigue and guides the reader’s pace. It creates a subtle layout hierarchy that honors the author’s tone, ensuring the structure supports the narrative without ever calling unnecessary attention to itself. Ultimately, great design elevates a book from a simple collection of words into an enduring physical object, deepening engagement, boosting retention, and honoring the craft of storytelling.

Theo’s introduction to the book: Every painting starts long before a brush touches canvas. It begins with the quiet act of looking with critical observations and sketching. This is a collection of work that gathers decades of “grass roots” sketches beginning in 1953 from Ohio to 2026 in Punta Gorda Florida. Beauty is often found in the things we were taught to look past, obscurity is often just a veil. While the grand vistas of the Midwest or the sun drenched coastlines of the Mediterranean often demand our attention, there is a quieter grittier magic in the details that hold these places together. This collection of drawings is a tribute to the overlooked run down relics of local history, be it those rhythmic sagging telephone lines against a New England sky or the broken windows of an abandoned farm. Seeing the weathered geometry of a Greek fishing vessel, or the faded letterforms on a roadside sign in Truro, Cape Cod. These are the ugly little things that when studied and sketched reveal the true nuances and character of a landscape. This book is not a polished gallery of work but a working document, printed and bound to lay flat like all good sketchbooks. Inside these covers you will find the rough and ready energy of on site drawings, complete with annotations and captions that capture fleeting thoughts regarding color, shadows, tonal qualities and information needed to complete a finished painting of the subject.
